The Indian couturier further explained the inspiration behind the iconic shirt. It is from the fern-laden lands of Kashmir. The paisley print design and handwork are the signature of the Kashmiri indigenous art form called ‘Kani’, inspired by the flora and fauna of the region. Traditionally found on shawls, this art form has now slowly found its way to shirts, suits and other clothing items.

Originating from the Kanihama region of Jammu and Kashmir, this intricate weaving is done by artisans using fine wooden needles. Considered to be one of the oldest handicrafts of Kashmir, it has been a part of traditions since Mughal times.

The new interest in the green shirt and its history has revived the age-old handicraft and provided an impetus to the languishing art form.
