‘It’s important to ensure inclusivity isn’t a passing trend but a long-term commitment’: Fashion designer Rocky Star

According to Rocky Star, inclusivity also reflects the changes happening in our society, and hence it's crucial for the fashion industry to keep up with those changes.

Known for working with international celebrities like Beyoncé to dressing up Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon in that iconic yellow sari for the song Tip Tip Barsa Paani (Mohra), Rocky Star is a name to reckon with in the fashion circuit. But, despite being a regular at fashion shows in India and abroad, the ace designer who recently showcased his collection at the London Fashion Week said that the experience was both “exhilarating and nerve-wracking”.

With Manushi Chhillar as his showstopper, Rocky Star showcased his collection ‘Damned Soul – An Eruption’, which he said is “motivated by and influenced by the freedom of today’s circle in which we are living”.

The women’s wear collection for spring and summer 2024, which features both avant-garde and wearable, recognisable, timeless, and opulent shapes, “is the perfect blend of contemporary style and stunning craftsmanship, sequin embroidery, metallic fabric texture, and signature baroque print,” he said.

In an exclusive email interaction with indianexpress.com, the designer told us about his experience of showcasing his designs on the international runway, his creative journey of three decades, inclusivity in Indian fashion, and his opinion on the evergreen debate between celebrity vs. models as showstoppers. Read the edited excerpts below:

Q: Tell us about your experience of showcasing at the London Fashion Week. How, and in what ways, was it different from the Milan runway?

Rocky Star: Returning to London after three years to showcase my collection for the fifth consecutive season was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. I vividly remember my debut on the British Fashion Council calendar, and now, every show feels like a thrilling chapter in my creative journey. I couldn’t wait to unveil my latest creations in the vibrant city once again. The style and fabric of the clothing are distinct from our previous showcase, and we’ve taken great care in selecting a location that aligns with the theme of our collection, which is entirely different from our previous presentation in Milan.

Q: You have been a part of the Indian fashion industry for decades; how would you describe your journey?

Rocky Star: My journey has had its ups and downs, but it has always involved learning new things. Throughout my work, I have encountered a lot of difficulties, but each one has helped me learn important lessons and advance as a designer. Throughout my fulfilling career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on over 200 film projects offering my styling expertise to numerous celebrities, both on and off the screen. From names like Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, and Hrithik Roshan to moments like dressing Raveena Tandon in that iconic yellow saree for ‘Tip Tip Barsa Paani’, I’ve also been fortunate enough to collaborate with international stars such as Beyoncé and Paris Hilton. Apart from my involvement in the entertainment industry, I’ve had the honor of being a jury member for Miss India, where I got to style the contestants, including this year’s Miss India winner. It has been a journey of growth and a rewarding experience, throughout. I take great pride in establishing my brand, Rocky Star, and presenting my collections both within India and on the global stage.

Q: How do such international exposures impact one’s creative journey and brand? What have been your biggest learnings and experiences?

Rocky Star: Having had the privilege of presenting my collection in various esteemed venues in cities like Milan, London, Dubai, and Los Angeles, it has truly been a remarkable journey. One can never grow accustomed to it. Each fashion show, and every presentation, brings forth a fresh wave of emotions, challenges, and joy. Experiencing cultures and gaining recognition can greatly influence a designer’s creative path and brand. It brings about opportunities for networking, expanding into markets, continuous learning, fostering innovation, and refining brand identity. Personally, this exposure has taught me the significance of being adaptable while staying true to my vision. It is a journey of growth and development where fashion acts as a language that connects with a diverse audience while upholding the essence of my design philosophy.

Q: According to you, how much has the Indian fashion scene evolved since you started out? How would you rate these changes?

Rocky Star: The fashion industry in India has gone through a transformation. It has moved away from being solely focused on culturally bound styles and has become a dynamic and diverse sector that blends tradition with modernity. This evolution has also embraced sustainability, inclusivity and the use of platforms to reach an audience. As a result, Indian fashion designers can now celebrate our heritage while catering to the evolving preferences and values of the world. This shift has made Indian fashion an influential and vibrant force in the fashion landscape.

Q: Since you have presented your collections on both Indian and international ramps, how would you say we fare vis-à-vis our global counterparts — and what can one learn from the other?

Rocky Star: Having had the privilege of showcasing my collections on both international runways I can confidently assert that Indian fashion has made progress and has secured its position on the global stage. We bring a fusion of tradition, artistry and cultural diversity to the forefront setting us apart. Our utilization of embroideries, handwoven textiles and vibrant hues resonates with an audience in search of authenticity and individuality. However, there is much to learn from our counterparts particularly when it comes to sustainable practices, streamlined production processes and efficient technology usage. By embracing fashion practices and adopting approaches we can further enhance our industry. Ultimately, it is an exchange where India’s rich heritage intertwines, with innovation creating a dynamic fashion landscape that inspires both locally and internationally.

Q: How inclusive, would you say is our fashion industry today?

Rocky Star: I think the fashion industry has made some progress towards being more inclusive but there’s still work to be done. We’re starting to see diversity in terms of body types, gender identities and ethnic backgrounds being acknowledged. Many designers are actively creating collections that cater to a range of customers and embracing models and talents from different backgrounds. However, there is definitely room for improvement. It is important to ensure that inclusivity isn’t a passing trend but a long-term commitment. We need representation of marginalised communities, affordable and size-inclusive options and ongoing education within the industry to create a truly inclusive environment. Inclusivity is not about fashion but also reflects the changes happening in our society, so it’s crucial for the fashion industry to keep up with those changes.

Q: But you are a hit not only on the runway but also among Bollywood celebrities. Who, according to you, carries your clothes the best?

Rocky Star: While it’s a challenging question to answer definitively if I had to name one Bollywood celebrity who I believe carries my clothes exceptionally well, I would have to say, Manushi Chhillar. Her grace, elegance, and ability to effortlessly embody the spirit of my designs make her a standout choice. However, I am deeply appreciative of all the incredible talent in the industry who have embraced my creations, each bringing their unique style and charisma to my collections.

Q: Celebrity vs. models as showstoppers has been a long-standing debate. Which side are you on?

Rocky Star: I don’t have a stance in the discussion between celebrity showstoppers and professional models. Both celebrities and models bring their qualities to a runway show. Celebrities often contribute star power and media attention while models excel at showcasing the garments with their runway skills. Ultimately my decision would depend on the context of the fashion show, the theme of the collection and the image I want to project. It’s all about choosing the person who can effectively represent and enhance the essence of the collection at that moment. Fashion is an art. Like any form of art, it offers room for flexibility and self-expression.
