There are bags… and then there’s Surbhi Jyoti’s bag, a “chalta phirta” portable general store that speaks volumes not just about her lifestyle but also her quirky, warm personality. “Main jitna samaan daal deti hoon, dump kar deti hoon bag mein; it can pass off as a general store. A chalta phirta portable general store,” she laughs, instantly drawing you into her candid energy.

For Surbhi, the value of a good old rubber band trumps fancy trinkets. “This, I’m sure, girls know the value of a rubber band!” she exclaims, adding that it probably doesn’t even belong to her but to her hairdresser. And this isn’t just any bag—it’s one that might throw out dental floss, coins, and hand cream all in one go. “Mere bag mein dental floss mil sakti hai, toh mera bag mujhse pooch sakta hai, tu kya kar rahi hai?”

Despite the randomness, there’s a method to her chaos. Essentials like her phone (“I absolutely never use it without this pop socket”), perfume (“one of my favourites — go for it, guys!”), lip balm, sunglasses, and her trusty tint always make the cut. “The moment you just apply the tint, it just changes your look.”

What doesn’t impress her? Branding. “I’m not into expensive or branded stuff. I literally see convenience,” she states matter-of-factly, admitting that even her fancier tote bag sits unused because “airport pe sab samaan tray nikal ke mein aa jaata hai,” whenever she travels, so she prefers not using it.

Even the unexpected finds in her bag have a story — from a Zara ka bill she doesn’t remember buying to three rogue coins from God knows where. “I have no idea! But I’m sure they’re mine.”

So, who would she want to carry in her bag? “Hugh Jackman, Meryl Streep, and… my mom, but I know she’ll scold me a lot!” she jokes. And let’s not forget Christopher Nolan, because, well, scripts can drop anytime.

So while it may seem like just a bag, for Surbhi it’s a mixed bag of humour, essentials, memories, and selfhood. “Jo bhi cheezein ismein hain, woh mujhe depict karti hain — meri personality ko.”
