Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh is, undoubtedly, one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. Both his art and personal life have drawn curiosity, whether it is his magnum opus painting The Starry Night (1889), which is believed to have been drawn by the artist from an asylum room in Southern France, or him cutting off his own ear, supposedly after an altercation with artist Paul Gauguin.
Now, his art has been brought to life through Van Gogh 360°, a multimedia art exhibition, which has become a global hit. The magnificent show combines art and technology and is brought together by director Massimiliano Siccardi, composer Luca Longobardi and art director Vittorio Guidotti.
In India, the show came to Delhi NCR on April 10 (and will continue till May 31), after its successful stint in Mumbai.
Through giant projections with vivid brushstroke, detail and colour, the organisers have showcased over 300 paintings of Van Gogh. From his self-portraits to Almond Blossoms, the magical allure of his paintings come alive through the exhibition.
Mansi Chugh, 37, visited Van Gogh 360° in Delhi in an attempt to learn more about the artist. “I admire art and wanted to visit this one-of-kind experience, which has never happened before in Delhi NCR. I have heard and read a lot about Van Gogh. The Starry Night is one of my favourite paintings of his, even though it depicts his mental angst. I love his art, the stroke of the brush and the way he has depicted nature. This immersive art experience took his paintings and elevated them. One can learn more about the painter through this multisensory exhibit,” she said.
Similarly, Apurvaa Pandey, 33, a marketing professional, said that one can understand Van Gogh’s quest for life through his paintings. “The textures, colours and vibrancy…if you see them through the context of what the artist was going through in his personal life, there’s a stark contrast. This art show, in a way, is very melancholic and heartwarming at the same time.”
As you walk through the room, you are transported to a different world. This is what Ananya Gupta, a student, who is a big fan of Van Gogh’s work also felt. “I created a few pieces inspired by him. And coming here unleashed my creativity even more. Art is usually consumed as a medium to be seen, but this immersive experience is something to be felt,” she told indianexpress.com.
On the other hand, Jyotsna Saluja, a public relations executive came to the art exhibition to see if it was worth the hype and was pleasantly surprised by the “dynamic viewing of the artwork and 360 degrees element”. “When you enter the venue, it feels dreamy and brings a sense of calm. It is an experience of a lifetime.”
The immersive exhibition will go on till May 31 in Delhi NCR. It will also travel to other cities in India later in the year.
