Sudarsan Pattnaik, the renowned sand artist, depicted the message of Earth Hour 2023 through his sand art as Goodwill Ambassador for Earth Hour India 2023. He created a huge sand artwork at Puri Beach in Orissa using more than 150 light bulbs to celebrate sustainability and raise awareness of climate change.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to encourage individuals, communities and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on the last Saturday of March as a symbol of commitment to the planet. It first started in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Pattnaik shared with WWF, “Earth Hour 2023 is our chance to urge people and communities across the world to take an hour to create a global moment of change. It is a great opportunity for all of us to join the global movement and work towards creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for generations to come.”

He further added that the inspiration behind his art is to get the message of switching off lights to people across the country, especially in Tier II and III cities. “We all must understand the perils of climate change and take on the responsibility to contribute positively towards the planet with our actions.”

Previously too, the sand artist, on numerous occasions, has dedicated his gigantic sand sculptures to raising awareness among people about various environmental issues like ocean pollution, climate change and plastic waste.

Pattnaik embarked on his journey to inform about hazards to the environment through his art in 2008 during the Berlin International sand artists’ competition. He created a polar bear sitting on top of a globe with a sign that said, ‘Save My Family.’ The sculpture depicted several countries around the globe becoming drylands because of climate change.

Subsequently, he won the prestigious People’s Choice Awards 2019 at the Boston International Sand Art Championship 2019. His sand sculpture, which received the highest number of votes in the competition, was on plastic pollution.

The artist also runs an art institute where he not only trains students in sand art but also helps them spread the message of environmental protection.
