An uproar erupted in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday over the mention of Sengol by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav during the Constitution debate.

Yadav said that Sengol was given to the Congress during the transfer of power at the time of Independence, but instead of acknowledging it as a symbol of justice, it was converted into a “walking stick”. As Congress members objected and the Chair asked for authentication, Leader of the House J P Nadda assured the House he will table all the facts.

The Sengol was installed in the Lok Sabha by PM Narendra Modi on May 28, 2023 following the inauguration of the new Parliament House.
Rejecting Yadav’s comments, Congress member Jairam Ramesh said, “Whatever he spoke about the Sengol, that is a story they have spread, that is not the history. It (Sengol) was not formally handed over to somebody. Some people came and that Sengol was given. A ceremony was held and from there they created a new history. I can table the evidence regarding this.”

To this Nadda said, “This is not a story. This is reality. When the country got freedom, Lord Mountbatten asked if you follow any ritual in transfer of power and can that ritual be adopted. Jawaharlal Nehru responded that he had no knowledge about it.”

He said that C Rajagopalachari spoke about the “custom followed in the Chola dynasty and a plane was sent to Madras (now Chennai) to bring the followers of that tradition to Delhi”. “They came and that (Sengol) was given to Nehru with religious ritual… Later it was placed in a museum where it was written — Jawarharlal Nehru’s walking stick,” Nadda said.
