The Left Front in Tripura organised a protest rally in Agartala on Monday to condemn Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks about Dr B R Ambedkar during the Winter Session of Parliament.

“We demand that he issue an apology and resign from his position (as minister). We are protesting across the country, including Tripura, and these protests will continue until Amit Shah apologises and resigns,” said Narayan Kar, convener of the Opposition Left Front, during a press conference in Agartala.

Opposition parties have been demanding Shah’s resignation over his comment in Parliament that it had become a “fashion” for the Congress to take Ambedkar’s name. “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven,” Shah said while replying to the two-day debate in Rajya Sabha on the “Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India” on December 17. After that, Congress and Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, protested on Parliament premises, holding Ambedkar’s photos.
