Three detained over minor girl’s ‘rape and murder’ in Chhattisgarh’s Durg

A minor girl is suspected to have been raped and murdered near her house in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district Sunday, police said.

According to the police, the girl was on her way to a relative’s place in the same neighbourhood Sunday morning when went missing. Hours later, when there was still no sign of her, her family approached the police, who allegedly found her body in a car in the same neighbourhood at 8 pm that evening.

The owner of the car and two others known to the minor’s family had been detained for questioning, police said.

“She had injury marks on her body and her medical report is positive for rape. We have registered a case of rape and murder… No one has been arrested so far,” a police officer told The Indian Express.

Police said all suspects were adults. According to a police source, the owner of the car had told the police that two others had been with him at the time of the incident.

As the news spread, an angry mob allegedly vandalised the car and set a two-wheeler allegedly belonging to one of the detainees, police said.

“The mob also surrounded the police as they were rounding the suspects to demand that they be handed to them,” the source said. The child’s family, meanwhile, took her body to the police station as a mark of protest.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Bhupesh Baghel questioned the state government on the incident.

“On the day of Ram Navami, a 6-year-old girl who went for kanya bhojan was kidnapped in broad daylight. According to the family, she was raped and then murdered. What kind of good governance is this?” he asked while speaking to the media.
