Vande Bharat Train: With the introduction of Vande Bharat Express, Indian Railways (IR) has revolutionized the train journey over the vast network. Since its inception in 2019, these semi-high-speed trains have been running with full occupancies. Currently, a total of 150 Vande Bharat Express train (75 UP and 75 Down) services are operational across the country.
Vande Bharat Train Speed
Developed by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the Vande Bharat trains have significantly enhanced intercity connectivity while reducing travel time. The Vande Bharat Express trains are designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, while their maximum operating speed is 160 kmph.
However, the speed of a train varies depending on various factors including geometry of the track, stoppages enroute, maintenance work in the section etc.
Apart from these, several other Vande Bharat trains also attain speeds of 130 kmph, though only on specific stretches of their routes and not throughout the entire journey.
For example, the Varanasi–New Delhi Vande Bharat Express operates at 130 kmph between New Delhi and Prayagraj, while the Prayagraj–Varanasi stretch is limited to 110 kmph. Similarly, India’s second Vande Bharat train, the New Delhi–Katra service, maintains 130 kmph between New Delhi and Ludhiana, but beyond Ludhiana up to Katra, it runs at 110 kmph.
In the recently concluded Monsoon Session of Parliament, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the upgradation and improvement of railway tracks on Indian Railways to increase the speed potential have been carried out in a big way during last 10 years.
