Perusing the latest status report of the CBI in the R G Kar rape and murder case, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said the trial at a Sealdah court would likely conclude in a month time.

On the directions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI had taken over the probe into the rape and murder of a junior doctor, whose body was found at the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 morning.

The Supreme Court, on the other hand, took suo motu cognisance of the matter and has been monitoring the progress of the probe.

A Bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday said that it emerges from the report that the trial is being conducted on a day-to-day basis — from Monday to Thursday — at the Special CBI Court in Sealdah. The bench said that statements of 43 out of the 81 prosecution witnesses have been recorded.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the central probe agency, said the investigation into allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was conducted separately, and a chargesheet has already been filed. However, the West Bengal government was yet to grant sanction to prosecute the accused government servants, the Bench added.

The Supreme Court, meanwhile, asked the National Task Force (NTF) — constituted by it to suggest measures for enhancing the safety of medical professionals — to share its recommendations with the states and Union Territories so that they can respond to it. The NTF will submit its final report within 12 weeks.
