Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday that for India to become the world’s economic superpower, work should be done on new sectors of the economy while stressing that the government is removing hurdles from the path of the country’s youth through reforms.

Addressing students at the Smart India Hackathon 2024, the PM said that the country is now progressing in sectors like digital content creation and gaming that were not as evolved 10 years ago.

He pointed to the recently announced One Nation One Subscription scheme for subscriptions to academic journals and said the decision is being appreciated globally. “This is to give the country’s youth, researchers, innovators access to international journals. One Nation One Subscription. This is a unique scheme through which the government is subscribing to journals so that no youth in the country is deprived,” he said.

“The aim of our efforts is that our youth should be able to compete with the best minds of the country. And, they should never feel that they lack any infrastructure or support,” he said.

The PM said that at every stage of the youth’s career, the government is standing with them and working according to their needs.

“The world of the future is going to be driven by knowledge and innovation. And in this, you are Bharat’s hope and aspiration. Your perspective, thinking and level of energy is different. But our aim is the same — Bharat should be the world’s most innovative, progressive and prosperous country. Today, the world says our strength is our youth, it is our innovative youth, our tech power,” he said.

Recalling how the hackathons helped in providing solutions, Modi said: “In the 2022 hackathon, a team worked on a system to map the intensity of a cyclone. This system has now been integrated with technology developed by ISRO. A few years ago, in the hackathon, a video geo-tagging app was developed to make data collection easier. This is also being used in space-related research. Another team worked on a real-time blood management system which provides details of blood banks in an area in case of a natural disaster… this shows how the country’s youth is working with the government to deal with the country’s challenges.”
