Security increased along railway track in Kashmir

This was after militants blew up a section of the line at Nowgam in the outskirts of the city.

Security has been beefed up along the 120-kilometer railway track in Kashmir valley after militants blew up a section of the line at Nowgam in the outskirts of the city on Monday night.

“Adequate security measures have been put in place to protect the railway property including the track,” a senior railway police official said.

He said the patrolling along the track between Qazigund and Baramulla passing through Srinagar has been intensified.

“Static guard at vulnerable points has also been augmented in order to prevent a repeat of the sabotage attempt by militants on Monday night,” the official said.

Militants earlier this week blew up two-meter section of the railway track at Sothoo, nearly one kilometer from the Nowgam railway station.

However, the incident failed to disrupt the rail traffic, which plies from dawn to dusk,as railway engineers repaired the damaged portion before the scheduling operations yesterday.

The train service, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in October 2008,has seen violent protests since last summer with property over crores being damaged.
