Notices issues to alleged illegal occupants of shops in Valley

Most of the shops owned by government and other government- controlled bodies had been sub-let illegally.

Authorities have issued notices to several thousand “illegal occupants” of government shops in Kashmir Valley,an official spokesman said.

The notices were issued after a high-level meeting chaired by Divisional Commisioner Kashmir Asgar Samoon here on Thursday evening,he said.

The meeting was informed that most of the 5000 shops owned by government and other government- controlled bodies had been sub-let illegally.

“The notices have been issued to illegal occupants by various departments including Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC),Estates Department and Srinagar Development Authority (SDA),” the spokesman said.

He said there are 1576 shops of SMC,1576 shops of SDA,805 of Roads and Buildings department,212 of Custodian department,251 of Estates department and about 1000 shops of Muslim Wakf Board. “Most of these shops have been sub-let illegally,” he added.

The Divisional Commissioner has also directed the concerned departments to enhance the rent of the government shops as per the market value,he said.

Meanwhile,the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned government’s drive to cancel the allotment of shops and business premises,terming it as “political vendetta”.

PDP General Secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir alleged such methods were being adopted to create an impression of “artificial normalcy”.

“Government is out to create more unemployed people in Kashmir even as it talks more of providing employment to youths,” Mir alleged.
