Nari Morcha members arrested in Darjeeling crackdown

The 576 ration dealers have been given three days to respond to the notices.

In the continuing crackdown in Darjeeling hills,two members of the Nari Morcha,women’s wing of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha,were today arrested in connection with old cases.

Kabita Gurung and Usha Lama,central committee members of the organisation,were remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody in a Kalimpong sub-divisional court where they were produced.

The assistant public prosecutor of the sub-divisional court said that they had been booked for taking part in the setting fire of a forest bungalow at Takdah where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had stayed on January 29,this year.

The two were also accused of blocking national highway and destroying government property,the prosecutor said.

A prominent businessman Briz Mohan Garg,who was arrested yesterday on suspicion of being a patron of the statehood agitation and an alleged financier,was remanded in two days’ police custody for further investigation,according to Pankaj Prasad,assistant public prosecutor of Darjeeling district court,where he was produced.

In another development,ration dealers in the hills were issued show-cause notices for keeping their shops closed during the agitation. The 576 ration dealers have been given three days to respond to the notices,according to the food controller and supplier.
