Curfew in force in Srinagar as separatists plan protests

Curfew was in force in Kashmir Valley in the wake of a protest called by hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference.

Life across the Kashmir valley remained paralysed again on Tuesday as the authorities imposed curfew in Srinagar city and all major towns across Kashmir to prevent protests demonstrations. However,people took to streets at several places in the afternoon and protested against the continuous killings in Kashmir.

Today’s protests are part of the shutdown calendar announced by hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference leader,Syed Ali Shah Geelani. All shops,business establishments,educational institutions and courts remained closed across the valley while traffic remained off the roads.

In south Kashmir’s Anantnag town,where two youth were arrest by police in the morning today,a large procession of protesters gathered on the streets in the afternoon and protest against police. The protestors soon resorted to stone pelting and police faired tear smoke canisters to disperse the protestors.

At Shopian a sit in protest was held out side the Jamia Masjid Shopian by the people in the afternoon today. Hundreds of people who participated in the protest raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. After the sit-in peaceful protest a peaceful rally was also organised by the demonstrators who went to the Town hospital to donate blood. “We want to donate blood for those who are injured during the current protests across Kashmir,” said a protestor,who did not mention his name. “The CMO told us to come tomorrow to donate blood”.

In Bijbihara town,hundreds of youth defied the restrictions and came out to protest against the current killings in Kashmir. There protesting youth clashed with polices and pelted stones. There is,however,no news of any killing or injuries from anywhere so far. It may be mentioned that 51 youth have been killed in police and CRPF firing across Kashmir during past two months.

The volatile north Kashmir,however,remained relatively peaceful today. In Baramulla town offered afternoon prayed on the roads and dispersed off peacefully.

Protests also erupted at Natipora and its surrounding areas in Srinagar. A large number of protestors took to streets and marched on the city streets.
