Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. (File Photo)A war of words broke out between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee over the latter’s statements on the BJP’s protests in Kolkata and rest of the state over a junior doctor’s alleged rape and murder at R G Kar Hospital.
Sharing a video of Mamata’s speech at a rally in Kolkata, Himanta wrote on social media platform X: “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes.”
He added: “Don’t try to burn India with your politics of failure, it does not suit you to speak the divisive language.”
In the video, the Bengal CM is heard saying: “Modi babu, you should remember that your attempt to burn Bengal using your party will backfire as the fire will not be restricted to just my state. It will spread to Assam, Northeast, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha… even Delhi would also be affected. We will bring you (Modi) down.”
Bengal BJP state president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar also condemned Banerjee’s remarks. The Union Minister wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah stating that Banerjee “no longer deserves to hold such an important position”. “It is unthinkable and unprecedented for a Chief Minister, who is constitutionally bound to rise above partisan attitudes, to make such intimidating statements that pose a threat to democracy,” Majumdar told reporters, news agency PTI reported.
“It is unthinkable for an elected Chief Minister to make such a comment. How can she say such things?” he questioned.
In the letter, the Bengal BJP president accused Banerjee of making anti-national remarks by suggesting that if Bengal were to burn, other states would also be affected. “This isn’t the voice of someone holding a constitutional position. It’s the voice of an anti-national,” Majumdar stated in his letter, asserting that Banerjee “no longer deserves to hold such an important position” and calling for her immediate resignation.
