Protest on farmers’ issues turns violent in Odisha

The group, Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS), is leading the agitation, demanding “price, prestige and pension” for the state’s farmers.

A group of people claiming to represent Odisha farmers clashed with policemen Monday on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar while they were on their way to the city.

The group, Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS), is leading the agitation, demanding “price, prestige and pension” for the state’s farmers.

The group from Khurda and Cuttack were detained, but several of them managed to break the cordon and entered the city. The police had earlier imposed Section 144 in the area. On Monday, the state government constituted an inter-ministerial committee to look into the demands of the farmers. However, NNKS convener Akhyay Kumar said, “The panel is not for pensions. This is another attempt to cheat us.”
