Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, speaking on Manipur violence issue during a debate on no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition against the Centre, assured the people of the strife-torn northeastern state that peace shall soon return as the government is doing everything possible to punish the accused. “The country is with you, this Parliament is with you. We will together find ways to resolve this challenge, peace will be established again soon. I assure the people of Manipur that the state will again witness progress,” Modi said in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier in his speech, launching an attack on the credibility of the Opposition bloc INDIA, the PM claimed, “Opposition needed ‘NDA’ to stay alive, they just added two ‘I’s to it due to their arrogance… Nothing is Congress’ own, from its poll symbol to ideas, everything has been borrowed from someone else.” Modi began his address by thanking the people of the country for reposing their trust on his government, and said, “No-confidence motion has proven to be always lucky for us, and this one also will ensure we return with record-breaking mandate.”

Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi had initiated the no confidence debate on Tuesday, saying that the Opposition has brought this motion for Manipur. Today marks the denouement of the three-day debate on the no-confidence motion, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to respond to the motion moved against his government by the Opposition.

Here’s what PM Narendra Modi said in Lok Sabha today:

  1. 01

    On Manipur violence

"Serious crime against women took place in Manipur and it is unforgivable. The central and state governments are making all possible efforts to ensure strictest punishment to those guilty. I want to assure people of the country that peace will be restored and Manipur will move ahead with new self-confidence."

"I want to tell the women of Manipur that the country stands with them. This Parliament is with them. We will together find ways to resolve this challenge, and peace will be established once again there. I assure the people of Manipur that the state will again witness progress."

“The root cause of all problems in the northeast is the Congress’s earlier policies.”

  2. 02

    On Oppn bloc INDIA

"UPA thinks it can reverse its fortune by changing its name to INDIA... The Congress is so blinded by arrogance that it cannot see the ground reality, people have deep no-confidence in it. People of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, UP, Gujarat, Bihar, Tripura, Odisha have been declaring no-confidence in Congress for years."

"You are trying to pass-off an old vehicle as electric one just by applying new paint. Opposition needed 'NDA' to stay alive, they just added two 'I's to it due to their arrogance. It thinks it can increase its credibility by using INDIA name for alliance. Nothing is Congress' own, from its poll symbol to ideas, everything has been borrowed from someone else. Congress adopted flag similar to national tricolour to add credibility, they also 'stole' Gandhi surname for gains."

"This is not INDIA but 'Ghamandia' alliance; everyone there wants to be 'groom', be the PM. Whenever circumstances will change, knives will be out in the alliance."

  3. 03

India among top three economies of the world

"Poverty is reducing in the country. According to Niti Aayog data, in the past five years, about 13.5 crore people in the country have come out of poverty... When you (Opposition) bring the no-confidence motion again in 2028, India will be the 3rd largest economy.”

"The Opposition should ask how I will make our economy third largest in the world. If Congress thinks this will happen on its own, then it has no vision."

  4. 04

    Track record of NDA government

"Our only resolution and goal should be development of the country. In 2014, a full majority government came after three decades, and we got a bigger mandate in 2019 because of our track record."

"We gave a scam-free government to the youth, giving them opportunity to fly high. We also restored the pride of the country and took it to new heights."

"The mantra of 'reform, perform and transform' as well as proper planning and hard work have taken country to new heights."

  5. 05

    On Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's speech

"I don't know what was the compulsion of Congress for sidelining Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, maybe the call was made from Kolkata. The tallest leader in Opposition did not rank in the list of speakers. It was Amit Shah's magnanimity that he promised time to Chowdhury. The Opposition could not prepare for debate on no-confidence motion despite so much time in hand... even its sympathisers are disappointed."

  6. 06

On Rahul Gandhi's comment on Bharat Maa

"Those who have commented on Bharat Maa in the Parliament, have hurt the sentiments of every Indian. I don't understand what has happened... They can't live without power. I don't know why people are wishing for Bharat Maa's death. What can be more unfortunate than this?"

"They are those who speak sometimes about killing democracy, killing Constitution. Actually, whatever they have in their hearts, come out through their actions."

  7. 07

    Thanking Opposition's move against him

"The Opposition has an 'ostrich-like approach', I thank its leaders for wearing black in the House as I see that as 'kaala teeka'. I convert abuses, unparliamentary language hurled at me by them into tonic. The Opposition has 'secret power' — anyone for whom it wishes ill, gets blessed instead."

  8. 08

    Congress tarnishing India's image

"The Congress and its friends have a history of doubting India's capabilities and prowess. Pakistan used to attack our borders, send terrorists to our country. It used to deny its role and the Congress used to believe them. The Congress used to believe in Hurriyat and other separatists. We carried out surgical strikes and air strikes."

"Today, whenever someone says anything ill about India, they believe in it... Congress takes pride in amplifying false propaganda of any global survey tarnishing India's image."

  9. 09

On HAL, LIC and investing in govt companies

"The Opposition has said bad things about government aerospace firm HAL, however, today it is touching new heights of success. The Opposition has spread misgivings about LIC, but the insurance firm is also touching new heights."

"My tip to those who are interested in stock market is invest in government companies and your money will grow."

  10. 10

    On Opposition's absence from Parliament

"They [the Opposition] are not interested in the Bills being discussed in the House... For them, party is above country, the country feels betrayed. They are more interested in hunger for power than the hunger of poor people."
