PM Modi becomes 1st Indian to receive Mauritius’ highest honour

This marks the 21st international honor for Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Mauritius’ highest civilian honour on Tuesday, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, making him the first Indian recipient of the prestigious accolade.  The announcement was made by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, recognising Modi’s contributions to strengthening India-Mauritius relations.

The award, regarded as Mauritius’ most distinguished recognition, is a testament to the island nation’s deep-rooted historical and strategic ties with India. Modi joins an exclusive list of global leaders who have received the honor.

During the event, Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam said, ‘The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’ is very fitting for you, Prime Minister. Since we became a Republic only five foreign dignitaries have got that title and among them is the Gandhi of Africa, Nelson Mandela who received it in 1998.”

A growing list of global recognitions

The Mauritius honour is the latest in a series of international awards bestowed upon Modi. He was last awarded during his visit to Kuwait, where he was conferred with the Order of Mubarak Al Kabeer, the country’s highest knighthood reserved for heads of state and foreign dignitaries.

This marks the 21st international honor for Modi. Among the notable awards previously conferred upon the Indian leader are:

  • Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour (France, 2023)
  • Order of the Nile (Egypt, 2023)
  • Order of the Druk Gyalpo (Bhutan, 2024)
  • Dominica Award of Honour (Dominica, 2024)
