Despite pushback from India on ceasefire violations, Pakistan continues unprovoked firing along LoC

Significantly, the ceasefire violation comes after the nominated officers from the Directorate Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan held talks over a hotline on Tuesday.

Pakistani troops continued unprovoked firing on the Indian side for the seventh consecutive night at various places along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, escalating tensions in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, officials said on Thursday.

“During the night of 30 April-01 May 2025, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the Line of Control opposite Kupwara, Uri and Akhnoor in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. These were responded proportionately by the Indian Army,” said Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal, defence spokesperson of the Northern Command, in Jammu.

Significantly, the violation from the Pakistan side has happened despite the nominated officers from the Directorate Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan holding ceasefire talks over a hotline on Tuesday, said a source.

During the talks, India had warned Pakistan against unprovoked incidents of firing by the Pakistan Army along the LoC.

The violations come even as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday asked External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to work with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions on the border.

After increased tensions along the border, the DGMOs had, in a 2021 meeting, reiterated their commitment to abide by the 2003 ceasefire agreement along the international border and the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Except for stray incidents of sniper shots, the agreement was effective till the April 22 terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam.

Pakistani troops resorted to ceasefire violations on the intervening night of April 24 and 25, soon after India put on hold the Indus Water Treaty in the wake of the terror strike at Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 people.
