Without naming Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha JP Nadda asked Tuesday whether the Congress actually supported B R Ambedkar and the Constitution.

“Hindu hinsak, Hindu hinsak…what is this situation?… Curse Sanatan Dharma and become secular, curse Hindus and become secular,” he said, triggering protest from opposition leaders. He said, “Did your allied partner not say that Sanatan is dengue?”, referring to comments made by Udhayanidhi Stalin last year.

Nadda claimed that Congress did not allow Ambedkar to put across his points on his resignation from the Nehru Cabinet in the House. In 1952 when Ambedkar was contesting the elections, former PM Jawaharlal Nehru himself campaigned against him, he said. “Their dislike of EVM is old. At that time, Ambedkarji lost by 14,000 votes and there were 78,000 invalid votes. This is why they have always liked ballot papers.”

He recalled the Emergency and said that the President’s Rule was imposed 90 times — 50 times by Indira Gandhi, 8 times by Jawaharlal Nehru, and rest by Rajiv Gandhi. “They are the defenders of the Constitution? They have taken down elected government 90 times. Carrying Constitution just like a diary doesn’t make one its protector,” said Nadda.
