Bajrang Dal supporters (PTI Photo) Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh on Wednesday said that if voted to power, the Congress party will not ban the Bajrang Dal, but added that “goons” and “rioters” will not be spared.
Talking to reporters in Bhopal, Singh said, “Bajrang Dal is a group of goons and anti-social elements. This country belongs to all, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christians, this is a country for everyone. so Modi ji (PM Narendra Modi) and Shivraj ji (MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan) stop dividing the country. Establish peace which will lead to development.”
When asked whether the Congress will ban Bajrang Dal if the party gets elected to power, the Rajya Sabha member said, “We will not ban. There may be some good people in Bajrang Dal. But, those who are goons and involved in rioting will not be spared.” The Congress party has routinely been accused by the BJP of being “electoral Hindus” who practise soft Hindutva.
MP Congress Committee President Kamal Nath had ayed host to controversial chief priest of Bageshwar Dham, Dhirender Shastri, at Chhindwara constituency in August, and when asked about Shahstri’s demands for a Hindu rashtra, Nath had said, “Today if 82 per cent are Hindus in our country, then what nation is this?”
When Singh was asked about Nath’s comments, he defended Nath by stating that his comments were misrepresented.
Reacting to Singh’s comments, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Neither Digvijaya Singh nor Kamal Nath care for Hindutva, country and society. To reap the crop of votes they keep speaking what they feel like.”
