The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Secunderabad, investigating the alleged rape attempt on a 23-year-old woman on a local MMTS train, said they have found no evidence to substantiate her claims.
As per the woman’s complaint, the alleged crime occurred on the evening of March 22 at around 8.15 pm. Chandana Deepthi, Superintendent of Police (SP), GRP, said the investigation was almost over but refused to divulge details.
According to the woman, she jumped out of a moving Multi-Model Transit System (MMTS) train to escape the advances of an unidentified man. The suspect, she said, sought sexual favours from her and she jumped out of the moving train to protect herself.
Some media reports had claimed that the woman confessed to the police that she had accidentally fallen off the train while trying to shoot a reel for social media. The reports said she was afraid of the consequences if her family came to know about the accident and fabricated the story of attempted rape.
The woman who works with a food delivery company and stays in a hostel in Medchal on the outskirts of the city, had alleged that the incident occurred when the coach became empty after two other female passengers got down at Alwal station. She was on her way from Secunderabad to Medchal at the time.
In her attempt to escape, the woman allegedly jumped out and sustained injuries to her head, chin, right hand, and waist. Passersby spotted her at Alwal station and rushed to Gandhi Hospital for medical treatment. She was later shifted to a private hospital for better care.
Soon, the Secunderabad GRP registered a First Information Report (FIR) on charges of attempted rape and formed four teams to nab the suspect. During the investigation, the police questioned over 100 suspects and examined footage from over 250 CCTV cameras en route.
The police have now sent a report to their legal team seeking an opinion on how to proceed further.
The incident led to widespread outrage and exposed the lack of safety for women, especially working women who return home late in the evening. The lack of CCTV cameras at railway stations and trains also became a talking point.
