Manmohan Singh Funeral News Latest Updates: The last rites of former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh were performed at the Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi at noon today. His mortal remains, which were brought to the Congress headquarters from his residence in a flower-bedecked vehicle, were taken to the Ghat. PM Narendra Modi, along with several Union Ministers and Congress leaders, as well as other top dignitaries, paid tribute to the former prime minister. Singh was cremated with full state honours. Manmohan Singh's final journey: The Centre has said that Dr Singh will be accorded a full state funeral and that Saturday will be a half-day holiday in all Central government offices and public sector undertakings. State mourning has also been declared for seven days until January 1. Politics over memorial space: The government has accepted a Congress request for allocation of space for a memorial to former PM Manmohan Singh. The Congress wanted Singh’s cremation at a place where a memorial could be built in his honour. Incidentally, it was the UPA government headed by Singh that had blocked demands for separate memorials. In a late night statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that after the Cabinet meeting, Amit Shah had communicated to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial.
