Manmohan Singh Funeral News Latest Updates: The last rites of former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh were performed at the Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi at noon today. His mortal remains, which were brought to the Congress headquarters from his residence in a flower-bedecked vehicle, were taken to the Ghat. PM Narendra Modi, along with several Union Ministers and Congress leaders, as well as other top dignitaries, paid tribute to the former prime minister. Singh was cremated with full state honours.

Manmohan Singh’s final journey: The Centre has said that Dr Singh will be accorded a full state funeral and that Saturday will be a half-day holiday in all Central government offices and public sector undertakings. State mourning has also been declared for seven days until January 1.

Politics over memorial space: The government has accepted a Congress request for allocation of space for a memorial to former PM Manmohan Singh. The Congress wanted Singh’s cremation at a place where a memorial could be built in his honour. Incidentally, it was the UPA government headed by Singh that had blocked demands for separate memorials. In a late night statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that after the Cabinet meeting, Amit Shah had communicated to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial.

The Congress on Saturday accused the Centre of insulting former PM Manmohan Singh by carrying out his last rites at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat instead of a designated spot that could later serve as his memorial. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, said, " The great son of Mother India and the first prime minister from the Sikh community has been totally insulted by the BJP-led Centre by performing his last rites at the Nigambodh Ghat."

On Friday, the Congress has formally requested the Centre to allocate a resting place for Singh, who passed away on Thursday night, along the Yamuna river in Delhi, where several former prime ministers have memorials. In response, the Centre said that a decision had already been made to set up a memorial, and a trust would be formed shortly to identify an appropriate spot.

Immediately after the Cabinet meeting, HM Shri Amit Shah communicated to Congress President Shri Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a late night statement on Friday, a day after the demise of the former PM.

In the meanwhile, cremation and other formalities can happen because a trust has to be formed and space has to be allocated to it, it added.
