Armed men abducted a Manipur minister’s personal assistant (PA) from his residence in Imphal East district on Friday morning, sources said.

The motive behind the abduction of Sarangthem Somorendro — the PA of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister L Susindro — remains unclear, with no person or outfit claiming responsibility so far.

Kuldiep Singh, the security advisor to the Manipur government, said police are taking all possible measures to rescue him.

“We are monitoring some people. As the incident is under investigation, it is not wise to dig into the details,” said Singh.

While the minister’s office is yet to issue a statement, police have registered a case.

A woman community leader from the PA’s locality said he was abducted by armed men at around 7.48 am.

“They assaulted him in front of his family before whisking him away,” said Th. Bimola. “Whatever Somorendro’s fault is, they (armed miscreants) could have communicated with the local clubs or Meira Paibis. Assaulting a person in front of his family is uncalled for and we condemn the act.”

Women community leaders said they would launch an agitation if Somorendro is not returned safely.
