He wrote that a bank account was opened under his name, which appeared on the terror attack charge sheet.A 68-year-old lawyer died by suicide in Bhopal after allegedly being blackmailed by cyber criminals who threatened to tie his name to the Pahalgam terror attack.
Shivkumar Verma, a resident of Jahangirabad’s Barkhedi area, hanged himself on Tuesday evening around 7:30 pm, police said. He was rushed to hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said they recovered a note in which Verma had written he was ending his life after being blackmailed to link him to the Pahalgam terror attack. He wrote that a bank account was opened under his name, which appeared on the terror attack charge sheet.
Police said Verma had also recalled his experience as a volunteer during the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in the note.
Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayan Chari Mishra said that the deceased had not filed a complaint earlier.
“Someone called him and told him that his bank account had been used for suspicious activities, due to which he apparently got scared and took the extreme step of suicide,” Mishra said.
Alerting the public, he said: “We keep saying this repeatedly in such cases, immediately inform the police. Fraudsters involved in digital cheating try to make the victim feel that he has committed some grave mistake. The police are carrying out further legal action in this matter.”
