Top News Headlines of October 12, 2025 | In his first outreach to New Delhi amid the recent bilateral chill that has seen 50 per cent US tariffs and increased H-1B visa fees, US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday and framed his visit in warm and effusive terms. Last month, during his Senate confirmation hearings, Gor was bullish about the bilateral relationship and had flagged India as a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” Ahead of the start of the Fall semester at American universities, the number of Indian student arrivals in the United States in August fell to the lowest since the Covid pandemic (2020), registering an over 44 per cent decrease as compared to the corresponding period last year. According to data maintained by the International Trade Administration — a US government agency under the Department of Commerce which records international visitor arrivals – 41,540 Indians arrived in the US on student visas (F and M categories) in August this year. This is the lowest since 2020, when travel restrictions were in place due to the pandemic. Four days after senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence, the Haryana government Saturday took its first action in the case by transferring Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya. Bijarniya, a 2015-batch IPS officer, was among police officials named in the “final note” recovered from Kumar’s pocket.
