A Jammu and Kashmir sessions court on Thursday awarded 25 years rigorous imprisonment to two villagers for raping a 17-year-old girl two years ago in Poonch district. Both the accused were also awarded three years rigorous imprisonment for abducting the victim, besides a fine of Rs 60,000 each. Both the sentences shall run concurrently, Principal Sessions Judge Zabair Ahmed Raza said.
Announcing the sentence, the judge said rape was not just a violation of the body of a woman and it leaves an indelible scar in the mind of the victim. “It reinforces a sense of worthlessness in the victim. The foremost psychological effect of rape is emotional trauma and paranoia,” he said.
Raza said though the accused have been brought to justice, the court would recommend compensation to the victim. “Most importantly, the victim has even right to receive the compassion, support and justice from the society in which she lives,” the judge said.
Both the accused were arrested following a complaint by the victim’s brother at the police station in July 2016 during the month of Ramzan. The brother said on July 4 he and his mother had lassi brought from the house of the accused to break their fast and fell unconscious.
In the meantime, both the accused entered their house and forcibly took the victim to their home, where they raped her, the brother said. After gaining consciousness, they found the girl missing, following which the brother narrated the entire incident to his uncle. The duo then went to the house of accused and found one of them raping the girl.
