The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested a tehsildar on Saturday for allegedly demanding Rs 1 lakh to grant permission to a resident of Handwara to fell walnut trees on his property.
Identifying him as Ghulam Rasool Bhat, the tehsildar of Kralgund, an ACB statement read that it received a complaint alleging the revenue official was demanding Rs 1 lakh in exchange for granting two permissions.
When the complainant told him that he was a poor person and could not afford to pay the money, the tehsildar allegedly insisted and refused to issue permission unless he was paid Rs 50,000 in advance.
Although he paid Rs 50,000 in advance, the tehsildar allegedly did not issue him permission to cut the walnut trees, the ACB said. When the complainant approached him again, he allegedly demanded the remaining Rs 50,000, it added.
Pointing out that a discreet inquiry was initiated into the matter, the ACB said that after verifying facts, a case was registered against the tehsildar and an alleged tout, Rafi Ahmad Lone.
An ACB team caught both of them and, during the search of the tehsildar’s premises, recovered Rs 50,000 allegedly paid by the complainant.
The accused were presented before a court, which remanded them to police custody for seven days, it added.
The ACB also apprehended a police head constable, Roshan Din, who allegedly fled after being trapped in a graft case.
Sharing details, an ACB statement said that a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was registered against Din, who was posted at Kathua police station.
He had allegedly demanded money from a person to delete his name from the list of accused in a case.
After allegedly accepting a bribe amount of Rs 15,000 from the complainant, the accused sensed the presence of the ACB on the spot and fled, the statement said, adding that he allegedly threw the money in the bushes on the national highway near Palli.
