JDU leader Anant Kumar Singh, who contested the Bihar Assembly election from jail, has won the Mokama seat by a margin of 28,206 votes. Singh was arrested on November 2 in connection with the murder of Dularchand Yadav, a Jan Suraaj Party supporter who was killed during a political rally in Mokama on October 30. He was taken into custody along with two associates, Manikant Thakur and Ranjit Ram.
This victory marks Singh’s sixth consecutive win from the constituency. Before joining the JDU, he had contested elections as an Independent candidate.
Among the trailing candidates were Anil Kumar (IND), Dr Rajesh Kumar Ratnakar (AAP), Manju Kumari (Panchpauniya Samaj Party), Priyadarshi Piyush (Jan Suraaj Party), Rahul Kumar (Lokhit Adhikar Party), Veena Devi (RJD) and Vikash Kumar (IND). In the previous Assembly elections, RJD’s Anant Kumar Singh had won the seat by a margin of 35,757 votes, with JD(U)’s Rajeev Lochan Narayan Singh finishing second with 42,964 votes. This time, the Mokama seat saw several major contenders in the fray.
Widely known as the ‘Capital of Bhumihars’, Mokama remains one of Bihar’s most volatile constituencies. The political histories of Anant Singh, the slain Dularchand Yadav, and former MP Surajbhan Singh—whose wife was the RJD nominee—have all contributed to the constituency’s reputation.
