Terrorists from Pakistan had opened fire at a meadow in the south Kashmir tourist destination on April 22, killing 25 tourists and one local man.

There have been a number of encounters in J&K in the two months since then as security forces searched for the perpetrators and sought to clamp down on militant activity.

On Sunday, in a major breakthrough in the Pahalgam investigation, two local men who had allegedly given shelter to the terrorists involved in the attack were arrested. The NIA also learnt that the all three gunmen at Pahalgam were from Pakistan.
