Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark on Wednesday that war was not a solution to conflicts, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, addressing the BRICS Outreach session in Russia’s Kazan, Thursday asserted that disputes and differences must be settled by dialogue and diplomacy.

While also noting that addressing conflicts and tensions effectively is a “particular need of the day”, Jaishankar said agreements, once reached, must be scrupulously respected.

“International law should be adhered to, without exception,” he told the member nations, while also stressing that there should zero tolerance towards terrorism.

He also said that the “situation in West Asia is an understandable concern,” and there is widespread anxiety that conflict would spread further in the region.

“We meet in difficult circumstances. The world must be prepared to think afresh on longstanding challenges. Our gathering is a message that we are indeed prepared to do so,” he said.

The Outreach/BRICS Plus meeting held on the final day of the BRICS Summit was hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The session was attended by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, more than 20 world leaders and over 30 delegations.

Calling for “single-minded, firm support of all” to “counter terrorism and terror financing” and making clear that “there is no place for double standards on this serious matter”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told leaders of the BRICS grouping Wednesday that India supports “dialogue and diplomacy, not war”.
