Varun’s anti-minority statement condemnable: Nitish

BJP leader Varun Gandhi's alleged anti-minority remarks on Wednesday drew criticism from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who termed it as ‘condemnable’.

BJP leader Varun Gandhi’s alleged anti-minority remarks on Wednesday drew criticism from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who termed it as “condemnable” but stopped short of demanding that the BJP deny him a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha poll from Pilibhit.

“I have not seen the TV footage (of Varun’s speech),but from what I have come to know, his statement hurt the sensibilities of a section of the society. Anything that is said during an election or otherwise that hurts the sentiments of any community is condemnable,” Kumar told reporters when his comments was sought on the matter.

Asked if he would use his clout with the top BJP leadership to pressure it into denying ticket to Varun,Kumar said,“I am in the JD(U) and we are contesting the LS polls in Bihar in alliance with the BJP and here we have together ensured there is communal harmony.” He,however, hastened to add,“those in the BJP must have taken notice of his (Varun’s) statement”.

Varun,a scion of the estranged Gandhi family, had drawn a flak from leaders of several parties, including his own,by his alleged communal remarks during campaigning in Pilibhit recently with party MP Syed Shahnawaz Hussain deprecating it,saying “no BJP leader has ever used this kind of language”.

Varun has denied the charge, saying the TV recording had been doctored.
