Seventy-year-old Vasdev Sharma on Sunday claimed that he worked as a spy for the country but the government did not rehabilitate him after he was released by Pakistan where he spent 10 years in jail.
Speaking to mediapersons in Jalandhar,Sharma said he had been engaged by Army Intelligence Force of Jalandhar Cantonment nearly four decades ago. It has been of no use as I spent my life working as a daily wager, he said.
Even now,the government can correct its discriminatory approach by providing aid to the children of spies like me who had never cared for life and were always determined towards the mission, Sharma said.
He claimed that when he was around 22-23 years old,he came in contact with a Lt Col of Army Intelligence Force at Jalandhar Cantonment. He motivated me to take up the profession of spying in Pakistan. I accepted the offer as they promised to pay Rs 100 per month and I was trained for three months in Jalandhar Cantt,in which religious and language training was also provided. I entered Pakistan for the first time in 1966 and used to visit Pakistan 4 to 5 times in a month… I was crossing the border on the night of July 22,1966 and nearly got drowned in Basantar river. I was caught by the Pakistan Rangers, Sharma said.
I was charged under various acts for spying and was awarded jail for 30 months under Defence Act of Pakistan and 10 years jail under 3 Official Secret Act of Pakistan. I spent my term in Multan,Lahore,Gujranwala,Mianwali,Montgumery jails of Pakistan, he added.
After Shimla Accord was signed between the two countries,I was released along with others and I returned to India. But the day I returned, the government stopped paying the Rs 100 monthly cheque. No one listened to my complaint as it took me a couple of years to get physically and mentally well, he said.
According to Sharma,12 years ago,he received Rs 5,000 from former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for his treatment. He has two sons and a daughter.
