I believe that though todays generation is a technologically advanced generation, its also one that lives in the virtual world. Though celebrities like Narendra Modi have gained a strong base by using social media, such as twitter and Facebook,as the medium to connect with the youth; how many of these youths actually go out and vote when the time comes? Want my vote, give me Jan Lokpal! thousands of placards could be seen hoisted in the air as the youth marched with Anna Hazare to fight corruption but at the time he was fasting, the same youth were munching way on Indian delicacies! If the youth were actually touched by the movement, would that have been the case? Coming to the social front, protests were held across the face of the country as the horror of December 16 gripped everyone youths held candle marches and demanded for a change! But how many of them, changed? How many of the youths that participated altered their behavior towards women or their mother/sister/wife,helped a needy women,or limited their drinking sessions (the reason behind the whole tragedy)? Last but not least, talking in terms of Entertainment; with YouTube at ones command its a click away to watch your favorite actors dancing across the screen. In fact,You Tube is a social media that has connected the youth with their favorite stars but, only virtually! How many of those youths that watch their favorite hero/heroine on You Tube, have stopped buying pirated DVDs,or have ceased downloading copies from the net, which not only is illegal but harms their favorite star? Summing it all up,I would simply like to say that social media has failed to connect celebrities with the youths soul, but has instead created a virtual world away from all realities of life.
