Veteran anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare broke his 18th indefinite fast on its ninth day after the Lok Sabha passed the amended Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill,2011 on Wednesday afternoon.

In his ‘victory speech’,the activist said that he will now work to set up a watchdog which will keep a vigil to make sure that the provisions of the Lokpal Bill are implemented in word and spirit.

We will also set up committees at the state, district and block level to monitor the implementation of the Lokpal Bill across India,he said.

Anna’s supporters present at the protest site in village Ralegan Siddhi – including those from outside the village – broke into jubilant celebration as soon as the announcement of passage of the contentious Bill was made from the stage by announcers.

The crowd cheered when Kapil Sibal tabled the Bill and when Sushma Swaraj gave Hazare the credit for the Bill. They booed throughout the speech of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and slogans were raised against the party when they walked out.

The celebrations intensified after the 75-year-old activist broke his fast at the hands of three school kids.

Those who refused to break their fast were moved to government hospital in Ahmednagar as directed by Hazare.

Villagers said that they had already prepared for celebrations soon after the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday since the passage of the Bill in Lok Sabha was just a formality.
