Slap effect: Mamata’s nephew may get Z+ security, same as that of CM

A top police official, requesting anonymity, said a committee, consisting of senior police officials, the Home Minister (Banerjee holds the portfolio) and the Home Secretary, reviewed the threat perception to Abhishek soon after he was slapped by a youth Sunday during a Trinamool Youth Congress meeting.

“An unwanted incident happened. We are reviewing his security system. The committee would decide on the cover and take a final call,” said Virendra, Director (security).

Minister and TMC spokesperson Partha Chatterjee said, “After the attack, police may naturally review the security arrangements and take necessary steps befitting the threat perception.”

Opposition parties, however, termed it as “much ado about nothing”. “Why does the prince need an upgrade in security cover? We all know that he was slapped by his own party man as a result of factional feud,” state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said.

CPM MP Mohammed Salim said “the issue must be addressed politically”.
