Former Congress legislator Jitendra Deshprabhu has apparently emerged as the front-runner for ticket from NCP for North Goa Lok Sabha seat after the two parties reached an understanding on Monday.
If selected,Deshprabhu,a die-hard Congressman, will have to leave the party and join the Sharad Pawar-led outfit.
Deshprabhu,a former Congress spokesman, lost Assembly election from Pernem constituency to BJP in 2007.
Former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Nirmala Sawant, who was also in the race for ticket,is reportedly losing out.
It has been unanimously decided that the North Goa NCP ticket should be given to Jitendra Deshprabhu, NCP sources said.
The high-level Congress-NCP meeting, which remained inconclusive yesterday, resumed on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
Senior leaders, including Chief Minister Digamber Kamat,NCP’s Goa President Wilfred de Souza and State Congress chief Subhash Shirodkar were present at the meeting.
Deshprabhu’s name has been referred to the NCP’s central leadership which will make an announcement from Delhi, a senior NCP leader said.
When contacted Deshprabhu refused to comment. Let the announcement be made and then only I can talk on the issue, he said.
