The Punjab and Haryana High Court Friday directed the Punjab government to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to identify and arrest the “big fish” who work behind the scenes and are involved in illegal mining.

The members of the SIT will be appointed by the Chief Secretary,Punjab and the probe team will submit its report in the court by May 27. The directions were passed today during the resumed hearing of a bunch of petitions demanding action against those indulging in illegal mining.

Passing the directions, the court came down heavily on the Punjab Police and Mining Department for having failed to arrest the actual illegal miners. A trolley owner,a labourer and some other small timers are what the the department and Punjab Police have arrested in the name of illegal miners till date.

It may be mentioned that 55 applications, seeking environment clearance, moved by Punjab, are pending before the Central government.
