When actor Dilip Kumar visited the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) for its convocation ceremony back in 1997 on December 14,it turned out to be the last at the institute as the event was marred by protests from students. Prior to 1997,the last convocation was held in 1989. Though there is still a while before another convocation takes place at the institute, the administration has announced they will issue diploma certificates to students who completed the courses between 1995 and 2006.
FTII Director DJ Narain said,The decision to issue diploma certificates was taken around 10 days ago as the need was felt to clear the backlog. As of now,it is not possible for us to organise a convocation as we do not have the details of students who have completed the courses or left it mid-way. We will issue diplomas to only those students who have completed the courses.
He said the issue of diplomas is not limited only to students of film studies but also those studying animation, television studies and script writing.
Since 1997 no diploma certificates have been issued to students.
