When parents were protesting against Rs 10,000 annual fee hike at Rosary School,Viman Nagar,on Monday morning,a few Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers ransacked the school premises. An offence has been registered at the airport police station against Swapneel Chavan and 15 other MNS workers for damaging the property.

Sunil Magar deputy director, education department, said the school’s proposal for fee hike has not been cleared. “We have issued a notice to the school staying any fee hike. If the school persists with the hike disregarding our notice,it will have to face consequences,” he said.

On Sunday, parents of students of Rosary School at Camp had protested the fee hike. On Monday,it was almost a repeat at the school’s Viman Nagar branch where they gathered for a meeting called by the school authorities regarding the new fee structure.

According to a parent, who did not wish to be named, there was unrest among parents as the school has increased the annual fees of all classes from I to X in the range of Rs 9,600-Rs 10,000.

“Initially the school had told us that it would increase the fees by Rs 200 per month. However, when the school reopened,we were surprised to see a list showing hike in fees under different heads. The hike is way over Rs 200 per month,” he said.

He said when initially some parents showed resistance, the school authorities told them they would cancel the admission of their wards.

“The parents had gathered to raise these issues. However, school authorities did not turn up. When some of us tried contacting the principal,we were told that he could not come due to some personal reasons,” he said.

“While the parents were demonstrating against the attitude of the school authorities in a peaceful manner,MNS workers joined the protest and ransacked the school,” said another parent.

Earlier, deputy district education officer Piraji Patil said the school had submitted a proposal for fee hike, but it was yet to be granted.

“We are in the process of scrutinising the proposal of the school for the fee hike, but have not finalised it yet,” he said.

The school authorities though were not available for comment.
