Slum dwellers in the city can now think of having a house in the city with Delhi Government on Wednesday launching a mega housing scheme under which 15,000 low-cost flats will be allotted to them.
Launching the scheme,Urban Development Minister RajKumar Chauhan said the allotment is likely to begin in the month of June.
He said the government will make its best effort to ensure that only deserving people get allotment benefit of the flats built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The Minister also inaugurated a camp at Raja Garden area in West Delhi to facilitate submission of forms for the scheme by the slum dwellers. The camp will run till May 18.
A beneficiary,who settled in a slum or JJ cluster not later than March 31,2002 will have to pay an amount of Rs 75,000 to get a flat under the scheme.
The slum dwellers who settled in any of slums between to April 1,2002 and March 31,2007 will have to pay an amount of Rs 1,32,000 per dwelling unit.
The government has almost completed construction of nearly 15,000 low-cost houses in Narela,Dwarka and Bhorgarh area of the city.
Earlier government had extended the cut-off date by five years from 2002 so that slum dwellers who had settled after March 31,2002 can get allotment of flats.
Chauhan said after verification of the documents,a draw of lots will be conducted in the month of June to select the beneficiaries.
The Minister said construction of around 32,000 flats will commence soon.
He said the government is also considering a proposal to build another 1 lakh flats for the economically weaker section.
