With the civic authorities embarking on an ambitious project to give a facelift to the Connaught Place, the visitors to the popular shopping arcade in New Delhi may face parking woes due to construction activities. Ahead of the Commonwealth Games, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will undertake facade restoration of all the blocks of CP under the redevelopment project for the area. The civic agency had completed the restoration of C Block on pilot basis last year, which was subsequently approved by the Delhi Urban Art Commission. With work starting on A and E blocks,CP may face some parking problems as construction material used for the project will be stored in the parking spaces, officials said. Moreover, there will be security issues too as scaffoldings will be installed for construction purposes and the cars cannot be allowed to be parked underneath, NDMC spokesman Anand Tiwari said. However,he maintained that the civic body is making all efforts to minimise the problems. He also did not rule out exploring new parking spaces. Though originally the entire redevelopment project was to be completed before the start of the Commonwealth Games 2010,the civic body has now decided to complete only the facade restoration work before the event. The other components like building of underground service ducts, centralised air-conditioning system and construction of underground parking spaces will be taken up later.
