Conversion row: Shooter’s husband held

A Monday bandh called by Hindutva organisations saw widespread violence in Ranchi.

In a joint operation with their Delhi counterparts, a team of Ranchi police on Tuesday night arrested Ranjeet Singh Kohli along the Delhi-Ghaziabad border.

Police sources said Kohli would be brought to Ranchi from Delhi by an early morning flight on Wednesday. Police have reportedly recovered a laptop and cash from him. It is not yet known whether his mother, an accused, was arrested along with him.

Kohli, husband of Ranchi resident and competitive shooter Tara Shahdeo, has been accused by his wife of domestic abuse with the intention of coercing her to convert to Islam.

Tara alleges that Kohli started assaulting her two days into their July 7 wedding and allowed her to leave their flat only once, on the day of Rakhi.

The issue has gained political overtones in Jharkhand, which is expected to go to polls this November.
