Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam Saturday raised concern over the use of outdated technology by Indian investigative agencies while probing criminal cases. Speaking at a seminar jointly held by the CBI and Mumbai-based trust ‘Legally Speaking’, Sathasivam called for periodic exercise for improving criminal investigation.
Along with the CJI, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Mohit Shah, Maharashtra Advocate General Darius Khambatta, Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani and Joint Director CBI Keshav Kumar spoke on ‘Improving Criminal Investigation’.
“Today, the problem is that some of the technologies applied by investigation agencies are outdated,” Sathasivam said. He also raised concern about the unreasonable delay in cases.
Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Mohit Shah said, “Defects in investigation leads to acquittal of the accused. Video recording of the FIR and audio recording of the phone calls of the police station need to be introduced. It helps to catch the real culprit.”
The CJI also spoke about the rights of death convicts in the jail and said, “Even a death convict is entitled to protection by the constitution. Unexplained delay is one of the circumstances in which the death sentence can be commuted.”
Jethmalani targeted the media for creating wrong impression. “The press is conducting criminal trial too these days. Some television channels create wrong impressions about the case and even judges feel helpless,” he said.
