The CBI may also chose to seek constitution of a multi-institutional medical board to investigate the deaths of several persons connected to the case.
The CBI is gearing up to begin its Vyapam probe with case documents it will secure of investigations conducted by the Indore police and the Special Task Force set up by the Madhya Pradesh government. CBI sources said they were waiting for a clearer picture to emerge of precisely how many cases it needs to register, and the specific allegations it will be required to probe. The CBI will have to appear before the Supreme Court on July 24 for further directions.
“The CBI has an anti-corruption unit in Bhopal, but a decision whether the case will be handled by the state unit or a special team constituted by CBI HQ will be taken once we get a clear idea of what exactly is expected of the agency. We are yet to know how many cases we will be required to file, as a copy of the SC’s order is yet to reach us,” said an officer.

With more than 1,000 persons named as accused in the scam, sources added that the CBI will assess whether it has the manpower in place to carry out the investigations purely on their own, or requisition manpower from other agencies to assist in collection of evidence.
“The scope of the investigation could be massive, so a call on logistics will also be taken before going forward with the probe. Meanwhile, we will be securing all relevant documents of the probes already conducted in the scam,” a CBI source said.
The CBI may also chose to seek constitution of a multi-institutional medical board to investigate the deaths of several persons connected to the case. In the Badaun sisters death case investigated by the CBI, a medical board had highlighted shortcomings in postmortem formalities at the state level that led to a wrong conclusion. The CBI later wrote to the MHA that poor facilities in states often results in wrong postmortem reports.
