A live bullet was found in the mailbox at the Indian embassy in Rome early this week along with hate mails, even as the Italian government expressed its displeasure at the delay in the trial of the two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012.
While the Indian embassy has been getting hate mails on the issue — sometimes over 100 per week — for the past two years now, this was the first time a bullet was sent.
Sources said the local police was informed, and the Italian foreign ministry was also alerted. The police are trying to ascertain the origin of the bullet and its sender.
The incident has caused concern in South Block, which is reviewing the security of its diplomats in Italy.
On Tuesday, the Italian government had summoned the Indian ambassador, Basant Kumar Gupta, to voice its “dismay” at the “unacceptable delay” in the trial. Italy also called its envoy in New Delhi, Daniele Mancini, for “consultations” in Rome. Italy has moved the European Union and the United Nations against the NIA’s move to slap provisions of the anti-piracy law against the marines.
