Sangrur: A synthetic athletic track — worth Rs 7 crore — has been approved for the Sangrur stadium by the Union Sports Ministry. The Centre will provide Rs 5.5 crore for the project,while rest of the amount will be given from MPLAD fund of Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singla. He said that the project has been approved under Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme recently. The MP claimed that work on this track will also start soon by the National Building Construction Company.

Books worth Rs 10 lakh sold

Faridkot: In the five-day heritage mela to commemorate Baba Farid,books worth Rs 10 lakh were sold. The book fair was organised by National Book Trust and People’s Forum,Bargadhi,at Brijendra College. Avtar Gondra’s book Tut rahe,ban rahe ghar was a big hit and recorded the maximum sale.

Bajwa slams Sukhbir for arrests

Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday condemned the arrest of Congress MLA from Kotkapura Joginder Singh Panjgrain and former MLA Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon and lashed out at Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for his arrogant and dictatorial attitude. Bajwa said that Sukhbir had ordered arrest of the Congress leaders out of frustration,in a bid to scuttle the Kabaddi Tournament in Bhimawali village of Kotkapura constituency,where he (Bajwa) was invited as Chief Guest for the concluding ceremony. He said that Sukhbir had forced a section of the villagers to hold separate Kabaddi tournament. He said: “Badal was indulging in cheap tactics and killing sportsmanship among the youth.”

Summons against senior deputy mayor

JALANDHAR: Summons were issued to Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia,former MC joint commissioner Rahul Gupta and others for illegally demolishing a factory in Basti Guzan area. The court of JMIC Jaspreet Kaur issued summons for November 15 to five MC employees and three scrap dealers on the complaint of the factory owner,Jyoti Sarup. In September 2009,the owner of Oriental Tools Corporation,Sarup,had complained to the court that Bhatia had got a portion of his factory demolished by misusing MC machinery and that too without issuing a notice under section 269 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act 1976.

Punjab to hold investors’ meet

CHANDIGARH: In a bid to attract industrial investments of Rs 10 lakh crore in the next two years,the Punjab government decided to hold investors’ meet in Taiwan,Bengaluru,Delhi and Mumbai next month. At a high level meeting on Tuesday,Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said he will lead a delegation to woo industries for setting up projects in the state. Badal gave his nod to holding an industrial meet in Bengaluru on October 1,followed by another meet at Taiwan from October 6 to 10 and then in Delhi on October 17 and finally in Mumbai on October 23.

Remove duty on sports goods: Jakhar

CHANDIGARH: Punjab’s leader of the opposition and senior Congress leader Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday demanded that the Centre should remove excise duty imposed on some sports goods as these were being manufactured under “household” industry,where it was cumbersome job to maintain accounts. Jakhar met Union Minister for Commerce,Industry and Policy Anand Sharma in New Delhi and told him that the sports goods are utilised by students and due to imposition of taxes,these become costly.

Cong blocking state’s dues,says Majithia

Patiala: State Revenue and Public Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia today accused Congress MPs from Punjab of adopting a negative approach to deliberately stall rightful due of the state in Central taxes and projects. By doing this they are not only causing an irreparable financial loss to the state,but also betraying the trust of the people,who had got them elected in the last Lok Sabha elections,said Majithia.
