Andhra couple crushed to death in Mecca mosque tragedy

Two Haj pilgrims, a couple, hailing from Macchlipatnam in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh were crushed to death when a crane crashed into the grand mosque at Mecca in Saudi Arabia, according to Prof S A Shukoor, Special Officer Telangana State Haj Committee, who received the information today.

He said that two pilgrims Abdul Khader (38) and his wife Fatima Begum (32) went on pilgrimage along with two other ladies on September 6, from Hyderabad Embarking Point.

”As it was Friday, the couple had gone to the mosque to pray as well as complete umrah formalities. They were staying at bulding number 27 in Aziriya area near Mecca. The two female relatives with them decided to stay back while the couple went to the mosque. When they did not return till Satuday morning, they lodged a missing complaint locally,” prof Sukoor said.

“When we came to know on Saturday evening, we feared the worst and informed Saudi authorities and Central HaJ Committee. Today, the couple’s bodies were identified. They leave behind two young children,” prof Sukoor said.

Prof S A Shukoor informed the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana Mohammed Mahmood Ali who informed Minister for IT and Minorities Welfare of Andhra Pradesh Palle Raghunath Reddy. The couple left behind two minor sons aged six and three respectively.
