CPI-M Kerala unit Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, whom the CBI has sought to arraign as an accused in SNC Lavalin corruption case, dismissed Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan’s remarks on the case as his own and said the party was firm that the agency’s move was politically motivated”.
“The CPI-M has a firm stand on the SNC-Lavalin case and his (Achuthanandan’s) statement on the issue could have been made on his own perception,” Vijayan, who is leading a ‘Nava Kerala March’,told reporters at the nearby Taliparamba town as the programme entered the third day on Wednesday.
Achuthanandan, breaking his studied silence on the issue, yesterday made it clear in New Delhi that as a Chief Minister he cannot question the moves of the CBI (to prosecute Vijayan) and the Kerala High Court.
The CPI-M’s state secretariat and the central leadership have termed the CBI move as a politically motivated action by the Congress ahead of Lok Sabha polls.
The issues raised by Achuthanandan before CPI-M politburo would be taken care of by the party’s central leadership,Vijayan said in a veiled attack on Chief Minister for his decision not to associate with the ongoing CPI-M march, organised to kick off a campaign to help the party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
He also alleged that certain sections of the media are indulging in a “misinformation” campaign to malign the party’s image in the backdrop of Lavalin case.
Vijayan accused a section of the media of highlighting “needless controversies” relating to the march rather than providing coverage on “the overwhelming response” it had received during the last two days.
He alleged that the opposition UDF in Kerala, particularly the Indian Union Muslim League, and the BJP were worried about the response to the march and were indulging in widespread attacks on CPI-M workers. He listed out incidents in parts of Kasaragod and Kannur districts in the last two days.
Accusing the BJP of orchestrating trouble by tearing and defacing party posters and cutouts errected in connection with the march,he asked them to refrain from such acts.
